Discover the Forest
I was recently discussing with a group of online friends how when we were young, we spent at least half the summer outside, and now if you walk out in many neighborhoods, you see no signs of children (even if you know your neighbors have kids). Why? Because so many are instead inside playing on their game systems, watching tv/movies, or online. In fact, U.S. children spend 50% less time outdoors than 20 years ago.
The Ad Council and US Forest Service have also noticed this trend and have started a PSA campaign with the goal of “encourage(ing) today’s youth (specifically tweens aged 8-12) and their parents to re-connect with nature by experiencing it first-hand.”

According to the campaign, “Research shows, that children who play outside: play more creatively; have lower stress levels; have more active imaginations; become fitter and leaner; develop stronger immune systems; have greater respect for themselves, for others, and for the environment.”
The Forest Service and Ad Campaign have created a website for the Discover the Forest campaign where tweens and their parents can find local parks (I found 5 within driving distance of us) and find some fun activities and hints for what to do once you get to the park as well as tips for how to be safe in nature.
As many of us prepare to head back to school, we are looking for last minute activities to do with our children. Instead of letting the “relax” in the house, going to crowded amusement parks, why not have your own “staycation” at a park near you.

I think the other problem is that people are AFRAID to let their kids out alone anymore…society has just gone so nuts. Ill admit that charlotte isnt allowed out w/o an adult watching her at all times. Not even in our fenced in back yard.

You may be right Trisha…I didn’t think of that as I still let Cameron roam around a lot…We have 100 acres and 3 family members living on it so she rides her 4 wheeler between all of them. I know that things can happen anywhere, but I do think our large amount of land and the fact that every neighbor we have either grew up with me or watched me grow up (depending on age) gives this sense of security (false, maybe….I hope not)…Literally everyone on our road has lived here forever…new houses are just kids that grew up and didn’t leave.
