Guitar Hero: Nintendo DS

guitarheroCameron had to have a Nintendo DS a few years ago when all of her uncles had one.  It was not important that she was 4 and they were 16 (or older).  They had them and she NEEDED one.  Being the mean wonderful mommy I am, I refused to buy her one but did buy her a handheld educational game system with promises that if she actually played it and took care of it, we’d look at DS’s in the future.  Leave it to those “uncles” to ruin my promise.  The next Christmas one uncle bought her the DS, and two others went together and bought her a Wii.  Thanks – I love you brothers of mine!  :)

I was quickly finding though that I enjoyed the DS (and Wii too actually) as much as she did. I was buying my own games and borrowing her DS on a regular basis.  So……Mom had to have a DS too.  Since entering review blogging, we’ve been given a chance to review a few DS games, but the set we recently received have to be my FAVORITE!!!  I had been eyeing these in the store, but just couldn’t quite convince myself to buy one.  Thank you MOM CENTRAL and ACTIVISION for the chance to review these games!

We recently received Guitar Hero On Tour Decades and Guitar Hero on Tour Modern Hits by Activision for the Nintendo DS.  I immediately ripped right into Decades as I couldn’t wait to play it (and had my DS charged up as I knew it was on the way).  Cameron didn’t have hers charged, but as soon as it was, she popped in Modern Hits. I had never any other version of Guitar Hero so it took me a little longer to get the rhythm down of knowing where the colors were, but both the girls had played on other gaming systems and took right to it. Since it’s arrival, we have jammed and jammed and jammed until I really thought we might just wear the games out.  Where have we played these? In the car, camping, sitting around the house. Cameron has carried them to the school when I was working in my classroom – they have literally traveled almost everywhere with us since they arrived.

What comes with the game? With both games, you recieve the game itself, an instruction booklet, a guitar grip for your DS, a guitar grip skin, Guitar Hero stickers, and a Guitar Hero pick stylus (that was one of my favorite parts), and an adaptor if you have one of the Original Style DS’s.

How do you play? If you’ve never seen a version of Guitar Hero – the concept is simple, the playing is a little more complicated.  On the screen you’ll see colored notes.  You’ll need to hit those notes in sync with the screen.  Some times it takes a tap, sometimes you hold them down longer for longer chords which might also require that you hold down more than one color at a time.  Talk about intense.  It doesn’t take long before you (or at least I) feel like I need to go back to school and learn my colors.  :)

One of my favorite features besides the actual game play? The multiplayer capabilities!  You don’t have to have multiple copies of a game to play multiplayer.  You can share the songs on your game with others wirelessly.  This means when we linked our 2 DS’s, we had access to all the songs on BOTH Decades and Modern Hits.

The Songs? Yes, I feel my age.  I didn’t know LOTS of the songs on either version.  I am a country music fan though so even some of the more popular ones were not popular with me.  It has been fun hearing and learning the new songs though and I’ve ended up adding a few to my Ipod since playing the game, but NINTENDO AND ACTIVISION LISTEN UP – I would LOVE a country version, and I’d also love to see a version with kids pop songs or such that my younger daughter could relate to more.

The game does state it is for 10 and up, and I can understand that. From the song choices to the coordination required, it is going to be more difficult (and maybe songs you don’t let children younger than that listen to); however, Cameron was able to pick it up and do almost as good as I could instantly at 8 (almost 9).  I am sure that it gets easier for kids as they get older though.  I’m glad that we have it now as she’ll be able to get more use out of it as she grows into it more and more.

Already a Guitar Hero fan? Check out their Facebook page and become a fan. They also have a great contest going on at Facebook.  A winner is selected every Friday through July 10th (so hurry and you can get your entry in for the last drawing) and you might just win your own copy of a Guitar Hero DS Game.
